Solve for x: 7 over 8 minus 1 over x equals 3 over 4. x = 1 x = 2 x = 4 x = 8

OpenStudy (kirbykirby):

try keeping the terms with the x on one side, and everything else on the other side: \[ \frac{7}{8}-\frac{1}{x}=\frac{3}{4}\\ \, \\ -\frac{1}{x}=\frac{3}{4}-\frac{7}{8}\\ \, \\ -\frac{1}{x}=\frac{6}{8}-\frac{7}{8}=-\frac{1}{8}\] Then, what you can do, is divide both sides by -1 (to get rod of the negative). Then you can easily see that you get 1/x = 1/8, and so only one number can be in the denominator (since both numerators are the same)

OpenStudy (kirbykirby):

get rid*

OpenStudy (jenniferjuice):

so its x=8 ?

OpenStudy (kirbykirby):

yes
