The equation of line AB is y = 5x + 1. Write an equation of a line parallel to line AB in slope-intercept form that contains point (4, 5).

hi sweetsunray

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if it is parallel it must have the same slope in y=mx+b m= slope. So the slope must remain 5. For the original equasion calculate 2 points: when x=0 -> y=5.0 + 1 = 1 -> so point 1 is (0,1) when x=1 -> y= 5.1 + 1 = 6 -> so point 2 is (1,6) you know that for the second equasion you have to be able to get point (4,5) where x=4 and y=5 and the slope m=5 so 5=5.4+b now try to calculate b if you have b you can write the general equasion where you leave y and x as unknowns then you can write it as y=5x+ calculated b

well i got y=5x-15

seems correct to me

thanks sweetsunray
