Step 1: Study these excerpts from speeches given by Lincoln: A house divided against it-self cannot stand. I believe this government cannot endure permanently half-slave and half-free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved—I do not expect the house to fall—but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing or all the other. —Abraham Lincoln, Springfield, Illinois, June 16, 1858
Step 2: Respond to Questions. 1. Analyze the excerpt from Lincoln’s speech by answering the following questions in one paragraph: • What is Lincoln’s point of view regarding the future of the country? • Which statement from the excerpt shows his point of view? • Explain how the selected quote shows Lincoln’s point of view. • What is an historical idea or event that supports Lincoln’s point of view?
Basically, he's saying that the country isn't going to succeed if it's one part says slavery should continue and the other part says it shouldn't. Also, that one way or another, slavery is either going to be legal in the whole country or its not. Can't really be more clearer than that. Hope it helped :)
So, for the first question, you could put: 'Mr.Lincoln's Point of view is that the country isn't going to succeed in the future, with all this debate on slavery.'
Second question: Well The first two Sentences say: 'A house divided against it-self cannot stand. I believe this government cannot endure permanently half-slave and half-free.'
Thank you! :D
Third question: This quote describes his point of view very clearly thus, the example given in the beginning (of the house) shows that something that divided cannot succeed.
And for the last one, i cant remember. xD anyway, maybe look it up on google or use an example from ur lesson. no problem anytime! :D
mkay thank u! :D :D :D
