OpenStudy (dbzfan836):

why are banks important to the U.S. economy, and how do government actions can change how banks operate?

OpenStudy (dangerousjesse):

Why not Zoidberg?

OpenStudy (dbzfan836):

lol, but seriously

OpenStudy (dbzfan836):

why are they so important?

OpenStudy (dangerousjesse):

Banks are the single most important supplier of credit. They basically control the flow of money in the US.

OpenStudy (dbzfan836):

oh. so can you explain how the government controls it?

OpenStudy (dangerousjesse):

The big banks actually kind of control the government.. If they disagree with what the government is doing, they can pretty much say "Do what we want or we won't lend you money."

OpenStudy (dangerousjesse):

Banks make billions of dollars every year off of interest and taxes, so they are the main places where the government looks to fund things like walls against immigration. If they don't want that to happen, they can't be forced by the government to loan out money.

OpenStudy (dbzfan836):

wow, thanks, @DangerousJesse !

OpenStudy (dangerousjesse):

No problem ^-^
