OpenStudy (julietstar1):

Are there any countries that banned books at a school level and eventually at a government level?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

China is one country that has banned a lot of material from books to films from reaching its citizens. I'm not sure about starting at the school level, though -- the government screens everything that is to be sold or used by the general public so if a book doesn't meet their criteria, it just never comes up in China much less its schools. In the US, the opposite has happened -- certain organizations working with schools and libraries have worked towards banning certain books (like Catcher in the Rye) but those efforts have never reached the federal level (the US, as a whole, has never federally mandated book banning). Other countries often ban books at the government level depending on the reasons they have for their particular corner of the world. The Bible, for example, is banned outright in certain countries because of its use as a religious text.
