OpenStudy (quickstudent):

When a red blood cell is placed in a hypotonic environment, the cell will: a. crenate b. shrivel up c. swell and burst d. plasmolyse

OpenStudy (quickstudent):

I think it is b.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Hypotonic means less concentration than Cell

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Got it ?

OpenStudy (quickstudent):

So, is the answer d?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Shrivel up means to "wrinkle and contract or cause to wrinkle and contract, especially due to loss of moisture." Shrink and shrivel are same things

OpenStudy (quickstudent):

So, what is plasmolyse? Can you explain?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Wait !

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Since the solute solution is less outside, water (solvent) will move into the RBC and will cause it to swell up

OpenStudy (abhisar):

getting my points ?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Shriveling and plasmolysis are same things. The only difference is that plasmolysis term is used with plant cell.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Plasmolysis is the term which describes plant cells when the cytoplasm shrinks from the cell wall in a hypertonic environment. In plasmolysis, the cell wall stays intact, but the plasma membrane shrinks and the chloroplasts of the plant cell concentrate in the center of the cell.

OpenStudy (quickstudent):

When I searched on google, it defined it as "Plasmolysis is the process in plant cells where the cytoplasm pulls away from the cell wall due to the loss of water through osmosis." It also says that it occurs in a hypertonic solution.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

yes plasmolysis and shrivelling up or shrinking all are same things. Plasmolysis is exclusively used with plant cells. The protoplast contracts but the rigid cell wall remains as it in hypertonic solution.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

In this question RBC is kept under hypotonic solution so the reverse process will occur and the cell willl swell up and finally will burst

OpenStudy (quickstudent):

Oh, so Plasmolysis happens in plant cells, and in red blood cells, the reverse will happen?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

In RBC Hypertonic-----> Shrivel/Shrink Hypotonic-----> Swell and Burst Isotonic------> Nothing In plant cell Hypertonic-----> Plasmolysis. Hypotonic-----> Swell and Burst Isotonic------> Nothing

OpenStudy (quickstudent):

Okay, I understand now. Thanks!
