square each of the two smaller side and add them together. compare that to the square of the longest side. if a and b are the smaller sides and c is the longest side, then: if \(a^2+b^2>c^2\) the triangle is acute if \(a^2+b^2=c^2\) the triangle is a right triangle if \(a^2+b^2<c^2\) the triangle is obtuse
