The magnetic reversals are matched exactly either side of the mid-atlantic rift. It's a bit like you painting a load of stripes on half a piece of paper, folding it over, then opening it so that the stripes are a mirror image of each other. The only way this could have happened is if sea-floor spreading takes place.

There is possible to see the remanent magnetism of ancient ages in stones. Because once the stone (lava/magma) freezes in Earths crust it always captures the magnetic field on that moment on its minerals.
