Which sentence uses the demonstratives correctly? a.This huge tree on Maple Street is not a maple tree. b.That huge tree on Maple Street is not an maple tree. c.That huge tree on Maple Street is not a maple tree. d.This huge tree on Maple Street is not an maple tree.
a vs. an----an should be used preceding words that begin with a vowel (see first source) a maple tree, not an maple tree. So B and D are out. (I believe that an article is a determiner, not a demonstrative--third source) this vs. that---this refers to something that is close, that refers to something far away (see second source) Are you standing next to the tree on Maple Street? Probably not. Otherwise, you'd simply say "This tree is not a maple." You're probably pointing at it from a distance. So, C is the best choice, IMHO.
Lulz
thank you so much :D
lulz No problem
Well you would know for sure that it is not B or D because it should be "a maple" not "an maple" And C would make most sense because you are not right by the tree to say "this tree" therefore you would say "that tree"
