solve for x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you guys see the picutre?

OpenStudy (imstuck):

which one? All of them?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The two functions represent two angels. The adding of 2 angles will either be 90 degrees or 180

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i just need help on one of them to know had to do the rest

OpenStudy (imstuck):

Ok, the first one has an angle of x-1, right? and another angle of 2x+1?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (imstuck):

Ok, then the measure of those 2 angles added together come to 90 degrees. So set up your problem like this: (x-1)+(2x+1) = 90 which translates to x-1+2x+1=90 3x=90 x=30

OpenStudy (imstuck):

Does that one example help you to do the rest?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but what do you mean added together measure ike what measures

OpenStudy (imstuck):

Those angles added together will equal 90 degrees, because the pic you showed us was a right angle, and right angles have a measure of 90 degrees.

OpenStudy (imstuck):

angles are "measured". It's just a term.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok yea then i do need help on the rest please if you dont mind

OpenStudy (imstuck):

I don't mind at all! Let me take a peek at the second one!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thank you!!!

OpenStudy (imstuck):

For the next one, you need to know that vertical angles are congruent. That means that angles that are "across" from each other are vertical and they have the same measure in degrees (they are equal). So your drawing actually means this:

OpenStudy (imstuck):

dw:1405055407464:dw

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so kinda like a square

OpenStudy (imstuck):

Without trying to confuse you, let me just tell you that there are 2 ways in which to look at this and I will do it the simpler way, I hope!

OpenStudy (imstuck):

All those angles will add up to equal 360 degrees. So we will do this:

OpenStudy (imstuck):

5x+5x+50+50=360 10x+100=360 10x=260 x=26

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok wow that is is simple!

OpenStudy (imstuck):

The next is like this:

OpenStudy (imstuck):

dw:1405055575927:dw

OpenStudy (imstuck):

If I told you that the 2 angles add up to 90 degrees, could you set up an equation for me?

OpenStudy (imstuck):

If not, I can help...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes i will try

OpenStudy (imstuck):

Very cool.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(6x+4) + 26=90 6x=60 x=10

OpenStudy (imstuck):

YES!!!!! Very cool!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yess!!!!!

OpenStudy (imstuck):

Now for the last one...it only looks scary....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes thats for sure

OpenStudy (imstuck):

Like with the one earlier with the vertical angles...the same thing applies. It looks like this:

OpenStudy (imstuck):

dw:1405055813399:dw

OpenStudy (imstuck):

And all those angles add up to equal 360. Can you set that up for me?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6x+4+6x+4+x+8+x+8 14x+24=360 14x=336 x=24

OpenStudy (imstuck):

You are awesome...very very good!

OpenStudy (imstuck):

Just remember the rules about vertical angles being equal to each other, and then remember that right angles add up to equal 90.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok perfect you dont even understand the help you hve been

OpenStudy (imstuck):

Well, thank you my dear. I'm a math teacher for a really good reason, then!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hahaha true true and a good one.... i feel bad asking but if you could, could you help me on this last page i have for this packet that i dont understand?

OpenStudy (imstuck):

I would be happy to help.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you!!!! you are one of the few people on here that actually help...ok so let me take a picture

OpenStudy (imstuck):

Ok, I'll be waiting with bated breath... ; )

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hahaha...ok i posted a new question on is called help!!!!
