Solve for x: 5 − (x + 5) > −2(x + 4) Help for a medal?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OKAY, Your first step would be to Distrubute that negative. and the -2.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How do I do that? I am very rusty when it comes to distributive property.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x >-8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, well you take the -, and multiply it by each number within the parenthesis.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What are your answer choices?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x > -8 x < -8 x > -18 x < -18

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it's the first one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you tell me how you got it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, once you distribute, you will have 5-x-5>-2x-8.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And then you subtract the 5 to both sides?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Nope, you have to combine your like terms. so on the left, you would do 5-5, which is just 0 and your left with -x>-2x-8. You have to add your 2x to both sides, and you will have x>-8. (:

Ohhhhhh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I see now. Can't believe I forgot this stuff. Thank you for the help again.
