least common denominator a^5 / a^2+4a+4 -6 / a^2-3a-10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@mathstudent55

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[\frac{ a ^{5} }{ a ^{2}+4a+4}\frac{ -6 }{ a ^{2} -3a-10}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you know what the first step would be to find the LCD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

factor

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Correct so did you factor yet?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i tried i got (a-2)(a+2) (a-2)(a+5)

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

You need to learn how to factor.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Very good, the only thing is that is you factored the second one wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It should be (a+2)(a-5)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay im not sure how to do the second one

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Both were factored incorrectly.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i know the first one will be (a+2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im confused

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

The first one is (a + 2)^2, not (a + 2)(a - 2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@mathstudent55 Is right the first one should be (a+2)(a+2) as well

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It seems like you need to review factoring

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

The second one is (a + 2)(a - 5)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my teacher was barely there to teach and it made it alot harder moving schools

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you understand how we got that? and yes @mathstudent55 that what I said

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes i get how you factor it but sometimes i get confused on the whole factoring thing and after

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

@amybrooke I have to get off soon, but I'll be glad to review with you how to factor polynomials at some other time.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay thanks

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Now that both denominators are factored, pick out the factors for the LCD the way I explained in the previous problem.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Take the common factors to both polynomials, and pick the one with the higher exponent. Then pick the non-common factor too.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Sorry, I really gtg.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so itll be (a+2)^2 (a-5)

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

One day I'll post a guide to factoring, and I'll tag you. You can use it as a study guide for factoring.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay thank you

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):
