2(sq rt 2-3x)-5=9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

whats the question

OpenStudy (johnnydicamillo):

Does it look like this: \[2\sqrt{2-3x}-5 = 9\]

OpenStudy (johnnydicamillo):

with the sqrt over the 2-3x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes thx! johnnydicamillo

OpenStudy (johnnydicamillo):

Okay lets start but getting rid of that "5" so add it to both sides so you get the following: \[2\sqrt{2-3x}=14\]

OpenStudy (johnnydicamillo):

then divide by 2 on both sides and you get \[\sqrt{2-3x} = 7\]

OpenStudy (johnnydicamillo):

do you know what to do from there?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is the answer -5/3?

OpenStudy (johnnydicamillo):

Do you know how to get rid of a sqrt? You get rid of a sqrt by squaring both sides.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think so johnnydicamillo. I got -5/3. Is that correct?

OpenStudy (johnnydicamillo):

No that is not correct. You need to square the 7. After you do that, try again.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok johnnydicamillo, I got -15 6/10

OpenStudy (johnnydicamillo):

Show me your work with the Draw button.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[2\sqrt{2-3x} =14\] \[\sqrt{2-3}=7\] 2-3x=49 3x=47 x=15 6/10
