The electoral problem was that Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr both received the same amount of Electoral votes even though they had run on the same ticket. One of the electors was supposed to not cast a ballot for Burr, but no one was chosen for that honor. This was before the 12th amendment, so the whoever had the most electoral votes became president, and second became vice president, instead of having separate ballots for president and vice president.
