4. What is the possible discriminant of the graph? a parabola opening up with vertex near negative 1.2 comma negative 9.1. a y intercept of negative 6 -11 zero 25 73 5. What is the possible discriminant of the graph? a parabola opening up x intercepts near negative 7 and negative 3 -13 zero 15 16
@kohai
So they've given you two points here (1.2, 9.1) You need to get the equation for this, and solve for y. After that, you can use the discriminant formula
ok would the first one be 73?
Let me check it
kk
*sigh* This is going to take me a moment. To speed things up, have you already made your equation for the first problem?
oh it's ok. I can wait, but I am not sure if i am right, just wanted to check with u
Alright, give me a bit to check then
kk
Would you mind telling me the vertex for the first problem?
near -1.2
Ok, this is the equation for the line that I got, the work I did to get it, and the resulting graph that looks pretty much what you gave above y=0.4(x+1.2)^2-9.1
i don't understand how to find the discriminant of the graph
I'm working on it, but you need the equation to do it
Oh. I see. So, this is in vertex form right now, we need to get it to standard form. y=ax^2+bx+c Can you find it in standard form?
umm..
i am confused
Alright. I'm going to finish this and then briefly explain, because I need to leave soon
thx
Ok. So, it was easiest to put this in vertex from, like I did above. Then you convert it to standard form. Now, the formula for the discriminant is Dis=b^2−4ab Where, a=0.4 b=0.96 c=-8.524
So plugging it in, it'll look like this. The discriminant is 14.99999ish so it'll round to 15
put the answer choices are -11 zero 25 73
I'm reworking the problem really fast, I won't have time to help you with the second one but it'll be the same process
thx
Ok, honestly I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I just reworked the problem using (-1, -9) and I'm getting a similar answer. The basic process is that you need to put this into vertex form, convert to standard form, and then use the discriminant formula, from what I understand. Sorry I'm not able to help you. Try asking some other people to help you, maybe they'll find what I did wrong.
ok thxx!! :)
Good luck :)
