what happens to the carbon atom during cellular respiration and fermentation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It is oxidized (cellular respiration) It is reduced (lactate fermentation) CELLULAR RESPIRATION The simplified, OVERALL equation for cellular respiration is: C6H12O6 + 6O2 -> 6CO2 + 6O2 + energy (as ATP) Looking at that OVERALL equation, the carbon in glucose is oxidized to carbon dioxide. LACTATE FERMENTATION Fermentation occurs AFTER glycolysis, and works on the pyruvate produced by glycolysis. In lactate fermentation, pyruvate is reduced to lactate, I won't address the other possibilities.
