An added risk of going to Mars is that there is a lot of radiation in space that can damage tissues. We aren’t sure what will happen after long term exposure to that radiation. True False

OpenStudy (anonymous):

True. There's all kinds of nasty radiation coming from the sun because you can view it as one huge nuclear reactor converting hydrogen to helium while giving of gamma rays.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

We are largely shielded from radiation coming from other galaxies thanks to our sun.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

contrarary, we are quite familiar with effects of exposure to nuclear radiation here on earth, giving circumstances that there is little to none factors that we know nothing about that could appear in outerspace after being there for quite awhile. I would go with false since we have plenty of data on radiation and it's effects to alive beings.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hm yes. Bonefreeze is right. The question is about the knowledge of effects of radiation on tissue. We know from experience : Marie Curie, Chernobyl, Fukushima etc that radiation is nasty.. Long term exposure means you die hehe

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I was just thinking about our knowledge of there being radiation in space that can harm us.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The whole catch of question is that can be shifted into philosophical kind of question, making it rather point of view and idea that anything might be possible. We know that material exposed to radiation gets changes in atomic levels, wether temperature, or alike, some may even change their structure. Ussually for tissue it either kills it or causes abnormalities form when tissue is reproducing itself. As jo.harvey mentions, there is lots of nasty stuff out there, but since there is space spations and we have people already being kept in outerspace for long periods of time we can say that we know enough about keeping one's tissues out of radiations harm.
