I'm not entirely sure this is the right place to ask but, I am trying to start an ancestry project and I need to find out where I can find documents for free but with the same type of system as ancestry.com.

OpenStudy (kittyjosh):

Depending on where your ancestors are from, a few good places to start are FamilySearch.org (Operated by The The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints), CastleGarden.org (For any ancestors you have that immigrated to the United States when Castle Garden was operating.) EllisIsland.org (For any ancestors you have that immigrated to the United States when Ellis Island was operating.) All of these offer free resources, and FamilySearch has hundreds of thousands. Ancestry has a database with free records and index collections that you can find at: http://search.ancestry.com/search/group/FreeIndexAcom but you will need an Ancestry Account (which is free.) If you need records for any other countries, I can try to help you find them. Here is the link to free Irish records: http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/

Also, if you are ever willing to pay for access to information, Fold3.com, and Newspapers.com are both great resources, which are operated by Ancestry.com

Thanks very much especially for the irish genealogy that was my main reason for doing this search!

KittyJosh do know where I could get records for germany and poland?

OpenStudy (kittyjosh):

What type of German and Polish records are you looking for?

OpenStudy (kittyjosh):

For German and Polish records from the 1500's to late 1800's I would recommend looking at FamilySearch. There are also a few records provided by the Holocaust Museum from the World War 2 time period that are available for free on Ancestry using the Free Index link I posted earlier.

Are you sure about that? What you find may surprise you.
