As far as I can tell if two lines share the exact same equation except for the y-intercept, they are parallel. For instance: the graphs of 8x + 3 and 8x +5 are parallel to each other

Not that I know of. Wikipedia defines parallel lines as merely being two lines which never meet (nothing to do with being parallel which is why you could view x^2 and x^2 + 1 as being parallel, I think).

Oh and remember that parallel lines will always have equal gradients
