@jim_thompson5910 http://cyh.leeschools.net/UserContent/Documents/AP%20CalcBC%20SumAssign%2014-15.pdf

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

we can do number one together

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

what I am going to do is give you another problem, which I will solve and then you follow with yours

OpenStudy (marissalovescats):

I've already done all of Part 1 with Jim and now we're continuing part 2 tonight, but thanks for the offer!

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

you should be more specific next time

OpenStudy (marissalovescats):

Well that's why I tagged Jim lol because we've already been working together on it

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

so have you learned integration yet?

OpenStudy (marissalovescats):

And he knows where we are in it

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

oh okay I am leaving then

OpenStudy (marissalovescats):

Yes I have lol I took AP Calc AB already

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

so why do you need help then?

OpenStudy (marissalovescats):

Because this is like by AB review for BC and I didn't understand a lot in AB and Jim has really helped me understand everything and gave me some confidence that I'll be able to do really well in BC with some solid review and understanding from AB.

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

you can try to learn :) http://finedrafts.com/files/CUNY/math/calculus/Larson%20etal%209th%20ed/

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

we're at "AP Calculus BC – Part 2" I think

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

ok so for #1, you first need to find out where those two graphs intersect this is where the calculator comes in handy

OpenStudy (marissalovescats):

I already am learning. For all the help Jim has given me/will give me in the future with Calc, Statistics and Physics, I should probably be paying him to be honest.

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

yeah you should because he probably had to pay for his tuition learning these imagine student loans?

OpenStudy (marissalovescats):

And yes that's where we are and YAY I get to use my new calculator for real math so exciting!

OpenStudy (marissalovescats):

I'm putting in y=x^3/1+x^2 and it says I'm putting it in wrong lol Any suggestions?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you have to use parenthesis to tell the calculator to divide by all of 1+x^2

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so y1 = (x^3)/(1+x^2)

OpenStudy (marissalovescats):

Oh I got it nevermind :P That's what I did it fixed it

OpenStudy (marissalovescats):

Okay so do I jut trace it to find the intersecting point or is there a button on my calculator or something lol

OpenStudy (marissalovescats):

I believe they intersect at (1.515,0.970) though

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you can use the "intersect" feature to jump straight to the intersection point and not trace

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

x = 1.515 is close, but not quite

OpenStudy (marissalovescats):

Ooo how can I get to this feature lol

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you have a ti-84 right?

OpenStudy (marissalovescats):

Yes TI-84+C

OpenStudy (marissalovescats):

I found it! Lol

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

i'm sure you went to 2nd ---> trace to get the intersect feature

OpenStudy (marissalovescats):

Yeah but it didnt do anything when I picked enter on intersect

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

it should show the graphs after you hit enter

OpenStudy (marissalovescats):

It shows me where the 4-2x intersects at (0,4) lol and it says on the bottom First curve? x=0 y=4

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you pick each curve then you pick a good guess that's close to the intersection point

OpenStudy (marissalovescats):

How do I "pick each curve" lol

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

by hitting enter

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

basically you find the intersection menu, then hit enter 3 times (2 for the curves, 1 for the guess)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

turns out that in this case, the guess is pretty close to where it initializes however, sometimes you'll need to get closer to the intersection point

OpenStudy (marissalovescats):

Oh I hit it 4 times and it shoes me exactly where

OpenStudy (marissalovescats):

1.488,1.025

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

I'm getting this

OpenStudy (marissalovescats):

Yes I got that too but in AP you have to use 3 decimal points and appropriatly round

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

alright

OpenStudy (marissalovescats):

Okay so finding the area, isnt it something like subtracting the integrals or something?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

correct

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

|dw:1406685329924:dw|

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

|dw:1406685344115:dw|
