a substance that is made of atoms of more than one type bound together is called a(n) ______________
i think compound.
A molecule is formed when two or more atoms join together chemically. A compound is a molecule that contains at least two different elements. All compounds are molecules but not all molecules are compounds.
"All compounds are molecules.." this is wrong. A \(\sf molecule\) is classified as a group of atoms joined by covalent bonds. If there are ionic bonds present then it's classified as a \(\sf formula~ unit\). As stated before, the answer is \(\sf compound\).
@aaronq read this http://www.chem4kids.com/files/atom_compounds.html just the first paragraph
The link you posted is for children so it will be oversimplified. The reason why the term molecule is not used for ionic solids is because of the structure. Molecules are defined units of a certain number of atoms, while ionic compounds (formula units) are repeating \(\sf unit ~cells\) often to very large numbers. http://chemed.chem.purdue.edu/genchem/topicreview/bp/ch13/unitcell.php http://www.chem.fsu.edu/chemlab/chm1046course/solids.html
