Although it is less efficient than aerobic respiration, fermentation is an important process often occurring during periods of lengthy and vigorous exercise. How might an athlete know if his body is using this process to produce the energy needed during exercise?

OpenStudy (zale101):

Fermentation can result from a vigorous exercise, when oxygen get limited, lactic acid takes place. The energy that is stored is being used but during intense excising, lactic acid can take place. It is the "temporary energy source." Athlete can know if there using lactic acid during intense exercising is by knowing that fatigues has reduced. Also, it can create muscle burns when trying to build up lactic acid because oxygen is usually used when exercising because it provides energy to do so. Once you use all the anaerobic methods, the lactate acid fermentation will increase and may cause muscle burns. take a look at this http://www.builtlean.com/2012/07/04/lactic-acid-build-up/
