Halp! f(x)=x^3 + x^2 -28x -12x - 84 is my function and I have to show how descartes' rule of signs proves that my function matches my graph.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i dont think descartes rule of sign can prove that a function matches a graph since it doesnt give any actual values to the roots

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the rule of sign simply tells us the possible number of positive, or negative, or complex roots a function might have. but it tells us nothing about the value of those roots so using it to prove that a function matches a graph is not sound reasoning
