Plug 2 into your equation see if you get 4 plug 3 into your equation see if you get 3 plug 2 into your equation see if you get 1

OpenStudy (jenniferjuice):

for 1 i got 17

OpenStudy (jenniferjuice):

2 i got 26

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

If you get all the same points from the equation that you have on your graph you can say that equation models it Note: \[(n, a_n)\]

OpenStudy (jenniferjuice):

3 i got 1

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

so set, n = 2 if \[a_n = 4\] then that is one point in your equation keep going if you get another value for a_n then it is not a model for the graph

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

do you follow?

OpenStudy (jenniferjuice):

is it c???

OpenStudy (jenniferjuice):

i 2 in for c and i got 1

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

Let me check set n = 4 http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=%281%2F3%29%283%29^%284-1%29 so this confirms that (4,9) is in the equation lets check n = 3 http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=%281%2F3%29%283%29^%283-1%29 so this confirms (3,3) is in the equation Lets check n =2 http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=%281%2F3%29%283%29^%282-1%29 so this confirms (2,1) is in the equation therefore it can be said to model the graph

OpenStudy (jenniferjuice):

is that c?

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

yes

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

you were correct

OpenStudy (jenniferjuice):

can you help with this ?

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

Note you can do this for a continuous graph as well usually checking with 2 points is sufficient though, what I mean by a continuous graph is, |dw:1408326875459:dw| so if you were asked to figure out which equation from a list this fit in you could just pick random points from the line to check it
