Great question! The definition of an adverb is a modifier that tells "how", "when", "where", "why" or "to what extent". So try thinking of your question in terms of usage examples: "To what extent" did something vary? It varied "widely". "How" did he care for her? He cared "deeply". "How much" debt did he have? He had "too" much debt. The word tally can be a noun meaning "a count or quantity" or it can be a verb meaning the action of counting. Tally does not serve as an adverb. I hope this helps!!
