A triangle has coordinates A (1, 5), B (-2, 1) and C (0, -4). What are the new coordinates if the triangle is rotated 90° clockwise around the origin?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(x,y) ---> (-y, x) So, take the coordinates and apply this rule & there's your answer! (=

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Rules Of Rotation: 90 degrees counterclockwise (-y, x) 90 degrees clockwise (y, -x) 180 degrees counterclockwise and clockwise (-x,-y)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Still lost..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, I'll do the first one. A.(1,5) So, according to the rules, rotated at a 90 degree clockwise the new coordinate would be (-5,1)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OH! So b would be -1, 2 or?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(x,y) turns into (-y,x) so, take the y axis and make it negative. and the x-axis goes in the place of the y-axis

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes! But don't forget to carry over the negative!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So -2 would remain -2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes. The only thing that changes is the y-axis

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And C would be (-4,0)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Close, but a negative plus a negative is a positive. So it'd be (4,0) You've got the hang of it, just watch your signs.

Makes sense, thanks!

No problem!
