can someone help me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Mrs.Mckinney With what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how to solve 1/3s-8=t for s

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[\frac{ 1 }{ 3 }s - 8 = t\] for s

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alright you don't want a fraction when you want to solve for a variable, so you multiply the equation with 3. s - 24 = 3t Now you add 24 to the other side of the equation. s = 3t + 24

OpenStudy (anonymous):

u lost me on the second one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2nd one?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

s = 3t + 24?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, you have \[(1/3)s-8=t\] You can add 8 to the right side, then multiply both sides by 3 to get \[s=3t+24\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Basically what I just did lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im talking about when u sent me, Alright you don't want a fraction when you want to solve for a variable, so you multiply the equation with 3. s - 24 = 3t Now you add 24 to the other side of the equation. s = 3t + 24 u lost me because i dont understand where u got s=3t+24 beacuas ethe problem was 1/3s-8=t for s so can u explain to me how u end up with s=3t+24

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how did yall get s=3t+24

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok? Well you multiply it all by 3, and 3 * 1/3 is canceling each other so it's 1 and 1 times anything is itself. -8 * 3 = -24. t * 3 = 3t (Three t's) Now you add the 24 so s can be by itself, because you want it alone to solve FOR S.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can u redo that please i dont understand it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ahhh... (1/3)s * 3 = s -8 * 3 = -24 t * 3 = 3t When multiplying the equation by something, you take the number/variable and see if it's NEGATIVE or POSITIVE, which is why it's -8 * 3 = -24 instead of 8 * 3 = 24

OpenStudy (anonymous):

When you add 24 to the other side, since it's negative and you only want to solve for s, it erases the -24 from the left side, and puts it on the right side.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no the 8 isn't negative the problem is set up like this 1/3s minus 8=t for s

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Um, yes it is. Please listen to me. Take the equation apart, and you get 1/3s -8 = t

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why are u taking it apart???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The minus sign isn't going to go in front of 1/3s- or else that would be I don't know, comprehensible.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

TO SEE THAT THE 8 IS NEGATIVE

OpenStudy (anonymous):

uncomprehensible**

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my teacher dont do it that way

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats why im confused

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Maybe you should listen to your teacher a bit more... and actually try to learn

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hi Mrs. First, do you understand why they multiplied each term by 3? That is to get rid of the fraction

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@anisanox1 - that was very rude. Let me see if I can help her.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

She's confused about the number 8 part

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, I will help her.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm frustrated at how she can't understand I'm sorry if I seem that way.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Teen hormones and the such

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That was very disrepectful and rude and u hurted my feelings....
