Not sure where to put this q.....I pick here :)

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

My sis was in 7th grade last year. She failed her english by 5 points and her math by 10. Even though she passed her other classes, she failed 2 major courses, thus failing the grade. So we thought that this year she would just have mixed classes...7th and 8th. Didn't work that way. was told that they do not mix 7th and 8th grade classes. Her new schedule has all 7th grade classes.....many of which she took last year and passed. Why would she have to take classes again that she already passed. What if she would have only failed math. She would have then been passed to the 8th grade. And if they don't mix classes, what math would she have taken then ? The principal is going to get a call tomorrow...but does this seem right to you ?

OpenStudy (compassionate):

Do you live in the United States?

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

yep...Texas

OpenStudy (compassionate):

Yup! That's Texas for you. Florida is like that, too. Even if you complete your work ahead of everyone else, you still cannot move on to the next grade. When you fail, you have to retake the whole semester. Welcome to the American Educational Standards.

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

that just doesn't seem fair

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

having to retake classes that you already took...and passed

OpenStudy (compassionate):

There are a few solutions. i. Register her with a private academy ii. Have her take a placement test (may not be variable for your school) iii. Register her in a different state (you may be able to register her in FLVS and have her take the placement test)

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

I might see if she wants to do that......would it be too late to register ? Do you know ?

OpenStudy (compassionate):

There are also other online institutes, such as Connections Academy. She will have to take a placement test.

OpenStudy (compassionate):

No - it's not, however, she will have to catch up with her classes.

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

thank you so much for answering. It was kinda bugging me.

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

I guess they don't follow the same rules in jr high then in high school

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

oops..typo..as in high school

OpenStudy (compassionate):

Call your Principle or Dean and see if you can get her enrolled in an online institute to makeup for her previous classes she failed. Also, your state may allow her to graduate ahead of the class if she finishes early, then move onto the next grade level. If your school will not allow her to graduate early, then Connexus will. OpenStudy (texaschic101):

sweet......thank you so much. I am gonna have a talk with her and see what she thinks. Again...thank you so much :)

No problem. Sincerely, An Ambassador for FLVS.
