"O Captain! my Captain!" by Walt Whitman O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done; The ship has weather'd every rack, the prize we sought is won; The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting, While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring: But O heart! heart! heart! O the bleeding drops of red, Where on the deck my Captain lies, Fallen cold and dead. Examine the imagery in the stanza. What is the significance of the two different images? The poet is trying to show that there are people mourning, but they do not feel the excitement of the the speaker. The poet is trying to show that there are people celebrating, but they do not feel the pain of the speaker. The poet is trying to show that he and his captain are happy, but the rest of the world does not understand. The poet is trying to show that he and his captain did not agree with war, but the rest of the world wants it.
