|3a+2|=4

OpenStudy (babalooo):

you've asked several absolution sign problems now. what don't you get.

OpenStudy (babalooo):

absolute* I hope you're not taking advantage of helpers to do your homework for you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is my first time on here and asking for help on this problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im not taking advantage i simply do not uderstand i got sat in the back of class :/ and i cant see xc

OpenStudy (babalooo):

well I'm more than happy to assist you. If you can't see being in the back of the class, maybe you'd like to ask your teacher to change your seat or perhaps get glasses. okay so i noticed you've post several absolute sign problems. from those problems that others have assisted you, what do you know about absolute signs or do you know how to approach this problem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you and honestly i dont know anything thats why i like sitting in the front because i pay more attention cause it takes me a while to understand

OpenStudy (babalooo):

okay, i guess you haven't really tried understanding the previous couple questions, but that's okay. if you are willing to learn how it works, i'm happy to help. so let's learn about absolute signs.

OpenStudy (babalooo):

absolute signs basically take away the sign of the thing that's in side the || so the thing inside which in this case (3a+2) can be postive or negative. so to ensure that we cover both solutions in both cases we solve for both. Got this? that's why we have 2 equations positive 3a+2 negative -(3a+2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay i see

OpenStudy (babalooo):

which means we have 3a+2=4 and -(3a+2)=4. Can you solve for a for both equations?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea ?

OpenStudy (babalooo):

no like can you do it yourself and tell me what you got for a?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wouldnt it be 3a=2?

OpenStudy (babalooo):

can you isolate a and leave it as a fraction solution? there should be 2 solutions since there's 2 equations.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont know how to do it for the second one

OpenStudy (babalooo):

do you know how to multiply in the - sign?

OpenStudy (babalooo):

what did you get for the first solution?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not really and like for the first i just stopped at 3a=2

OpenStudy (babalooo):

you know you can divide both side by 3 and get a=2/3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ohhhh okay yea I was thinking about doing that but like I didn't know if it'd be wrong

OpenStudy (babalooo):

when you have questions, it's best you ask or you'll get marks off

OpenStudy (babalooo):

-(3a+2) just apply negative to both values in the inside

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yea
