Where does all of the energy in an ecosystem ultimately come from? Please help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This would defiantly be the sun, organisms like plants are used to harness that energy.

Thnxs! :)

OpenStudy (alistairgarratt):

But don't forget the organisms living around geothermal vents at the bottom of the oceans..thousands of meters below the surface, the energy source comes not from splitting water to oxygen and hydrogen (photosynthesis) but other compounds, e.g. hydrogen sulphide. This ecosystem is established without the sun's energy amd may relate more to the earlier ecosystems in our planet's history.

Yeah that's true. But I don't think that's what the question is asking for.
