2 x squared plus x minus 36

OpenStudy (kkutie7):

2x^2+x-36?

OpenStudy (kkutie7):

are you factoring?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes sorry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(2x+9)(x−4) One Of Those

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do you factor it?

OpenStudy (kkutie7):

(x+)(x-) start with this. you know that there is one + and one - because 36 is negative.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (kkutie7):

the 2 in front of the x^2 means you need the two xs from (x+)(x-) to multiply out to 2x. (2x+)(x-) 2x*x=2x^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it is (2x ) (x- ) so far?

OpenStudy (kkutie7):

yes, not you want to look at -x and -36 you need two number here. they have to add up to x but multiply out to -36

OpenStudy (kkutie7):

because of the 2 in front of the two x it doesn't always work this way.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there are no numbers that do that though....

OpenStudy (kkutie7):

9*-4=-36 right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ya lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so (2x+9)(x-4)?

OpenStudy (kkutie7):

plug them in to (2x+)(x-) (2x+9)(x-4) you can multiply them together to see if it works or not.

OpenStudy (kkutie7):

you got it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you so much!
