Can people start this course at any time, or are there deadlines, etc.?
It is self-study, and you work at your own pace. There are two 18.02 courses: 18-02sc (note the sc) http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/mathematics/18-02sc-multivariable-calculus-fall-2010/index.htm and 18-02 http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/mathematics/18-02-multivariable-calculus-fall-2007/index.htm Both use Denis Auroux's lectures. The first version 18.02sc breaks up the lectures into sessions, adds more background material, examples, and short video tutorials. The idea is to make it suitable for self-study. 18.02 is more the MIT course, with lectures, problem sets and tests. 18.02sc is the better choice, but I always went directly to the lectures in 18.02 and watched an entire lecture (rather than watching the snippets/divided lectures in 18.02sc) Apparently some people's attention span were taxed by the full-length lectures, but I found it annoying. But be assured it's a lot of work to get through this course, and takes some discipline on your part.
