Water flows into a swimming pool at the rate of 5.94 gal/min.If the pool dimensions are 26.5 ft wide, 45.9 ft long and 16 ft deep, how long does it take to fill the pool? (1 gallon = 231 cubic inches). Answer in units of min

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The time taken will be given by \[\frac{ volume of pool }{ flow rate }\] but you need to take care to get the units correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You're welcome, let me know if you work it out, see if I get the same answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for clarification, once I get the volume would I then convert the volume to inches and THEN divide it by the the flow rate? (Please excuse my ignorance)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you calculate the volume in cubic feet with the given numbers, you could convert that to cubic inches (multiply by 12x12x12). Then convert the flow rate from gallons/min to cubic inches/min - the conversion factor for that is given in the question Once that is done you can plug the numbers into the formula for the time taken

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok! Would the answer be 0.77309895491?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's not the answer that I have - 0.77 minutes would be about 46 seconds and that feels like too little time to fill a swimming pool with less than 6 gallons per minute, don't you think ? My answer is a lot bigger.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok! My new answer is.....245.089020071 :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Still different to my answer What do you have for the volume of the pool in cubic feet ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in cubic feet I have 19,461.6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

good, me too now convert to cubic inches by multiplying by 12^3,( that's 12 cubed) tell me what the pool volume is then in cubic inches

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok now I have 33,629,644.8 for the pool volume

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok so THEN i divided by 1372.14 (my flow rate) and got 24508.9020071. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes ! that is pretty much what i have

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It must be a big pool, or a slow water supply, that many minutes is about 17 days, i think it is the right answer to the problem though : )

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha! Thank you so much for your patience!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you're welcome
