Fan and Medal

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A food packet is dropped from a helicopter and is modeled by the function f(x) = -15x^2 + 6000. The graph below shows the height f(x), in feet, of the food packet at different times x, in seconds: graph of function f of x equals 6000 minus 15 multiplied by x squared Use the graph to determine the reasonable domain of f(x) based on the context. x ≤ 6000 0 ≤ x ≤ 20 -20 ≤ x ≤ 20 all real numbers

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Well, think about it, what does the graph of x\(\sf ^2\) look like?

OpenStudy (abb0t):

You can either use this generalization OR pick prandom points and graph.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't know why it is not showing the symbols. I will write it out. A. x is less than or equal to 6000. B. 0 is less than or equal to x which is less than or equal to 20 C. -20 is than or equal to x which is less than or equal to 20 D. All real numbers.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The graph of x^2 is a parabola that opens upwards right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@abb0t

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@IMStuck

OpenStudy (adamaero):

right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Right what??

OpenStudy (adamaero):

upwards

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh okay. Do you know the answer?

OpenStudy (imstuck):

This is a negative x^2 parabola, so it doesn't open upwards like a cup, it opens downwards like a mountain.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ohhhh okay

OpenStudy (adamaero):

"The graph of x^2 is a parabola that opens upwards right?"

OpenStudy (imstuck):

When you factor out a -15, you have -15(x^2 - 400). Then when you factor that, you get x^2 = 400, which makes x equal both 20 and -20.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So C?

OpenStudy (imstuck):

That's my take on it!

OpenStudy (imstuck):

They just want you to solve for x, and they give you a word problem in which to do it. It's all factoring.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Great!! Thanks so much!

OpenStudy (adamaero):

you made it waaaaa to easy for him, but what's done is done

OpenStudy (imstuck):

But you led him to believe that it was a parabola that opened upwards. When he said, "It opens upwards, right?" you said it did...you said "right" and from that, there was NO WAY he was going to get it right.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

C isn't right (if anyone wants to know)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank youuu @babyboy2332
