Start with 2000 and place a decimal point between the first two digits (2 and 0) to get 2.000 Drop the trailing zeros to get just 2. You can write 2.0 but that's the same as 2 Now we have 2 or 2.0, how do we get back to 2,000? We do so by moving the decimal point 3 spots to the right So that's why \[\Large 2,000 = 2 \times 10^{3}\] notice how we have the base '2' and then we're multiplying that by 10^3. The exponent 3 over the 10 represents how many spaces we move that decimal point over
