Write the equation of the line that is parallel to the line whose equation is y = –4 and that passes through the point (1, 5)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@IMStuck Help again please i couldnt learn that great from instructors

OpenStudy (imstuck):

What do you know about slopes and parallel lines?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Parallel never touch and have same slopes

OpenStudy (imstuck):

They most certainly do! So we already know the line we are looking at is y = -4. Let's draw that out to see what it looks like:

OpenStudy (imstuck):

|dw:1409646990282:dw|

OpenStudy (imstuck):

So the line we are needing to draw and the equation we need to write is parallel to that line. So it will be what kind of line?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

forgot what its called but the slopoe will be zero passing through a different y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

slope*

OpenStudy (imstuck):

It's a horizontal line and horizontal lines have no slope, right? But you got it when you said it would be passing through a different y. What is the y if the point the line has to go through is (1,5)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would it be 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y=5

OpenStudy (imstuck):

That line up there, y = -4, could also be written as y = 0x - 4.

OpenStudy (imstuck):

And yes, it would be y = 5.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh so y=-4

OpenStudy (imstuck):

You're really great with this!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the answer would be y=-4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait is it y=-4 or y=5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok y=5 lol just second guessing
