River valley civilizations are the earliest known civilizations created. These societies were given this name because they all originated alongside or nearby mighty rivers. Two of the most well-known river valley civilizations are Mesopotamia and Egypt. The two civilizations share many similarities in their political, economic, and religious aspects, however, at the same time; both are very diverse. The river valley civilizations Mesopotamia and Egypt were both highly influenced by religion. Both societies were polytheistic, meaning to believe in many gods and goddesses, and they thought so high of their rulers, they believed they were descendants of the gods or simply gods themselves. Mesopotamian leaders were considered kings, or lugals, whilst the Egyptian rulers were called pharaohs. For these divine monarchs, the people of these civilizations created elaborate buildings of worship. The Mesopotamians created decorative temples and Ziggurats for their gods or goddesses and kings, whilst the Egyptians built massive, elaborate structures for their pharaohs; the pyramids. When it came to worshiping their gods or goddesses, both of these societies had different ways of doing so. Mesopotamians trusted religious leaders to speak for them to the gods, as they believed these leaders were trusted by the gods and could speak for them. Egyptians, however, mostly referred to their holy book: the Book of the Dead. The book includes proper means of worship and the gods to be worshiped. Although both of these societies believed in an afterlife, the Egyptians took it a step farther. Both civilizations buried their dead with items they believed they’d need once they passed on, but the Egyptians believed that when someone died, their soul left their body, and the soul would then return and be reunited with the body after it was buried; this is why they mummified all their dead.
