My professor gave us a statistics assignment where we have to name 5 variables and classify those variables as qualitative, quantitative, discrete, or continuous, and when I asked what the variables are supposed to be, he said coin tosses. I'm at a loss here; aren't there only two outcomes to a coin toss? Please, some help. Thanks.

OpenStudy (dangerousjesse):

There are only two outcomes, but your teacher is asking for variables :)

OpenStudy (dangerousjesse):

So the coin only has two sides; that's quantitative.

OpenStudy (dangerousjesse):

You can't flip the coin the same way every time; that's qualitative.

OpenStudy (dangerousjesse):

The coin will not always land on one side; that's discreet.

OpenStudy (dangerousjesse):

The coin will land; that's continuous.

OpenStudy (dangerousjesse):

Do you understand? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I do mostly, yes, but what would the fifth variable be then?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do I just make up another scenario for the coin?

OpenStudy (dangerousjesse):

Hm.. You could say that the coin weighs x; that's continuous.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, so they're specific scenarios for the coin, I understand. Thank you so much for your help.

OpenStudy (dangerousjesse):

No problem :)
