whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

More stuff with significant figures..

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

5650 L / 27 min

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5650 is 3 sig figs and 27 is 2 sig figs so you want your answer to be 2 sig figs

OpenStudy (anonymous):

again divide like normal and round

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

What is a sig fig? How do you know how many there are?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

significant figure. non 0 numbers are always significant, so you know the 565 in 5650 is significant, but the 0 isnt significant because theres no decimal point

OpenStudy (anonymous):

again, all non zeros are significant, so all of 27 is significant

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

Yes, I know that, but what is a significant figure?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why would it be 1?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and sig figs are all non zeros, zeros between non zeros, zeros left of a decimal, and zeros right of the decimal unless theres no nonzero left of the decimal

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Suppose I ask your height, and you say `1700 mm`

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and when you solve a problem with 2 or more numbers, you answer is going to have the same amount of sig figs as the number with the smallest amount of sig figs

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because you didnt have a decimal, 1700 would have 2 sig figs. but if you said 1700., that would be 4 sig figs.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that make sense?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

how would I know which tape have you used to measure your height ? (do you have a tape that can measure nano meters or fempto meters ? )

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

1700 mm tells me that you have a tape with markings for every 100mm

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

you can never measure less than 100mm using ur tape if I were to use your tape to measure my height, i might come up with 1800mm or 1600mm but never 1656 or 1734

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

if that makes any sense... sig figs are related to conveying measurements to rest of the scientific community in an unambiguous way everyone need to know the precision of your tape

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

Okay, but how do you know how many sig figs would be in a number, say 298 ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

lets say you have told me that the new plant in your garden is 298 cm high

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

that clearly tells me that you can measure upto a cm using your tape, eh ?

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

Yeah

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

you haven't rounded and told me 290 or 300 you have told me 298

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

that means number of sig figs is 3

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

So the 2, the 9, and the 8 are all sig figs, right?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

if you have rounded it to nearest 10cm and told me that the height of plant is 290cm then the number of sig figs would be 2

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

if you really have a thick and useless tape, you would be rounding it to nearest meter and telling me that the height is 300cm here number of sig figs is just 1

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

So 0 is not a sig fig..

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

its the NUMBER of sig figs that important, not the actual digits

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

if you have told me that the height of plant is 209 cm then the number of sigfigs is still 3

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

because i know that your tape can measure up to a cm accurately because you're saying 209 and not 210

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

Okay, so if the number were 2084, there are 4 sig figs.. but in 100 there is only one sig fig, right?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

You got it !

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

Awesome! Thanks! ^.^

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

what if

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

what if your tape can really measure upto a cm accurately, but your plant height is exactly 100cm ? how would you pass that info to other scientists ?

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

That it is 3 sig figs?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

100. : sigfigs = 3 (precision = 1cm) 100 : sigfigs = 1 (precision = 1 meter)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

you just add a "dot" in the end, and the scientist community would understand that you did the measurements with 1cm accuracy and not 1m

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

Ahhh, okay. ^.^

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

So for the problem I have above, what do I do ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

which problem ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

5650 L / 27 min

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

5650 L / 27 min Yeah

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

# of sigfigs of numerator = ? # of sigfigs of denominator= ?

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

4 for numerator 2 for denominator ?

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

oh, switch those around

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

2, so you perform the division and round the result to 2 sigfigs

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

2 is small ^^

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

hey wait a sec

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

5650 L / 27 min # of sigfigs in 5650 is 3, right ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

because because... you can only measure in 10L increments

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

its same as the height example we have worked earlier

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

Oh

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

5450 L tells me that whoever made measurement has a 10L beaker for measuring; he cannot measure less than 10L.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

so # of sig figs in 5650 is just 3

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

so it would be 3/2 ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

yes, since the smallest of them is 2, we need to round the result to 2 sig figs

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

5650 L / 27 min do the division, what do u get ?

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

209.3

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

yes, round it to 2 sigfigs

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

21 ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

how is 209.3 related to 21 ?

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

Or just 20?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

if you round ur height of 176 cm to 2 sigfigs, would it become 17cm ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

are you 17cm ? :P

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

209.3 rounding to 2 sigfigs is same as rounding to 10's place here

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

Oh, nope. XD

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

209.3 rounded to 10's place is 210

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

which indeed has 2 sigfigs

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

Oh okay

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

So I don't add anything with the L and min in my answer, it would just be 210 right?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

210 Liters per Minute

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

210 L/M

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

units carry along

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

Ah, okay. ^.^

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

scientific notation is easy but sigfigs are very tricky, you need to make sense of these somehow

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

Yeah, I see that. XD

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

\(\Large\bf\rlap{\color{red}{\bigstar~T}\color{gold}{H}\color{greenyellow}{A}\color{lime}{N}\color{cyan}{K~}\color{blue}{Y}\hspace{0 pt}\color{purple}{O}\color{magenta}{U}\color{orchid}{!~\bigstar}}{\color{black}{\; \bigstar~THANK~YOU!~\bigstar}}\)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

yw :)

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

Mind helping me with eh, 2 more? ^.^

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

sure post

whitemonsterbunny17 (whitemonsterbunny17):

Done so, I tagged you. ^.^
