How do you change 34 degrees 16' 15" to degrees?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hiya! First of all, can you answer this (though it's ok if you can't!): how much is 1' ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

60 seconds

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Great! Now, second question: how much is 1 degree?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1 minute right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, if 1 degree was 1 minute, I don't think they'd bother with two different names for the same thing! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha that's true but then what would it be?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1 degree is 60 minutes (and 1 minute is 60 seconds)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So basically, you break down 1 degree in the same way as you break down 1 hour :) That's all!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok thank you :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So now maybe you can try the original question. If you like, you might want to break it into two steps: (degrees, minutes, seconds) -> (degrees, minutes) -> (degrees).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(Although you don't have to do it that way)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You're welcome :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The degrees would be 36.7083 degrees right?
