Which set of ordered pairs in the form of (x,y) does NOT represent a function of x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (gorv):

one value of x will link to only one value

OpenStudy (gorv):

like (2,3) now to can not be paired with any other value of y

OpenStudy (gorv):

it is the basic rule of function

OpenStudy (gorv):

(2,3) (2,5) as x=2 is paired with more than one value of y so it is not a function

OpenStudy (gorv):

but (2,3) (4,3) is function as different value of x are paired

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it would be C?

OpenStudy (gorv):

in third option 3 is paired two times ....

OpenStudy (gorv):

yeah ...you got the concept ????

OpenStudy (gorv):

how we solve it ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

also can you check this for me|dw:1410192458326:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes thank you for help on that one! can you check my answer for this one? ^

OpenStudy (gorv):

yeah your approch and ans both are correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you so much for your help!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@gorv

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would i have to change it to y=mx+b?

OpenStudy (gorv):

yeah that will be easy

OpenStudy (gorv):

after that calculate the value of line

OpenStudy (gorv):

the point at which line will cut y axis ....at that point x=0 put it in equation and find the value of y and similary when it cut x axis y=0 find x line passing through those point will be your line

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[y=\frac{ 5 }{ 2 }x +1\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is that right?

OpenStudy (gorv):

yeah its correct

OpenStudy (gorv):

now put x= 0 and find y and next time put y=0 and find x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y=1?

OpenStudy (gorv):

yeah at x=0 y=1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and im confused about the second part i got...

OpenStudy (gorv):

now in y=5/2x+1 put y=0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x= 2/5?

OpenStudy (gorv):

hmmm......0=5/2+1 -1=5/2x x=-2/5

OpenStudy (gorv):

nnow check which line is passing through these points ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhh okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would it be B?

OpenStudy (gorv):

it would be A

OpenStudy (gorv):

wegot (0,1) means x=0 when y=1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ohh okay, that makes sense now, i was confused on the signs

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you have time for another one?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ive done all of the ones i know how to do, but i have a few that have stumped me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1410194387254:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@gorv

OpenStudy (gorv):

yeah slope is right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i am confused on what to do next

OpenStudy (gorv):

now put the value s in pont slope formula

OpenStudy (gorv):

(y-y1)=slope(x-x1) or (y-y2)=slope(x-x2)

OpenStudy (gorv):

got it ??

OpenStudy (gorv):

slope =(10/(-17-3))=10/(-20) not 15

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh okay so (y-8)=10/-20 (x-3)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well (y-8)=-1/2(x-3)?

OpenStudy (gorv):

noooooo...just put one point either (-17,8) or (3,-2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay so (y-(-2))=-1/2(x-3)?

OpenStudy (gorv):

yuppp

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@gorv

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@gorv this number 11?
