MEDAL and FAN This is a fundraiser project as being the Class Treasurer. The goal is to take in as much money as possible via fund raisers and spend it all on specific projects by the end of the school year to get as close to zero as possible. Use the financial records of the fundraising events and project spending to figure out the combination of the most effective fundraisers and projects so as to get as close to zero, without over spending.

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

@phi

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

my problem is when it comes to getting as close to zero as possible

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

so can someone please help me?

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

I really really need help... Please whoever helps I will be very happy :)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

This looks like a linear optimization problem. Do you have more details on this ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

whats the module/chapter name this project belongs to ?

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

this is only adding and subtracting integers.

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

seventh grade

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

I am still trying to figure out what the problem is about

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

as far as I understand about this problem, it might mean that there is already a fixed amount of fundraising money. the projects are the ones that the treasurer needs to get. therefore, i think, that we should try out different prices of the projects and see the combinations. then, see which ones when subtracted from the total of the fundraising money, might bring us the closest to zero.

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

my conflict is when it comes to choosing the combinations and seeing whether they will be close enough to zero or not.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Like, if you want to choose one fundraiser and one project, the minimum difference = 10 ?

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

yeah something like that maybe

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Notice that the difference will be in multiples of 10

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

having figured out that we can achieve the difference as low as 10, the only option left out is 0

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

yes ?

OpenStudy (phi):

although I do see a short-cut. halloween candy is $400 and class hats is $400. zero is as small as you can get.

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

so what projects should i get then?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

that settles right ?

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

what projects and maybe combinations should i have? i am having trouble on those.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

but it would be a boring assignment if it were this simple i smell you're hiding some important details/constraitns

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

i will attach a picture. one moment...

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

yes

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Agree, it need not be so trivial also he is in 1+1+1+1+1+1+1 th grade !

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

OpenStudy (phi):

Perhaps they want this: add up the amount raised: 2570 add up amount that could be spent: 2660 take away the smallest project that makes the cost less than 2570 i.e. take away books for library (200) for total cost of 2460 difference is 2570-2460= 90

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

i am on your track phi, but what do you mean by "take away"?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

that makes more sense

OpenStudy (phi):

we can't afford 2660 (only have 2570, so we have to cut some expense)

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

but how can i take away the library books? by purchasing them?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

if you purchase them, you need to pay for them

OpenStudy (phi):

they ask for the "combination of projects" (that you can afford) that implies you can leave out some of them

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

oh. so are you trying to say that i shouldn't get the books (if i am wrong, forgive me) ?

OpenStudy (phi):

in other words, some projects don't get done, because you did not raise enough money. The question is, which project should you cut?

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

books

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

am i right?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

you may cut dances fundraiser also to get the balance close to 0

OpenStudy (phi):

yes. dropping lollipops is not enough. dropping any other project makes the difference between the amount raised and amount spent bigger than the 90 we get if we drop the books

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

okay so now i need help on the combinations please. will that be okay?

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

so now my balance is 2460 right?

OpenStudy (phi):

They do say "combination of fund raisers", implying dropping some of the funds. As ganesh points out, if you drop the dance funds your difference between raised and spent is $10

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

sorry but i don't get "if you drop the dance funds your difference between raised and spent is $10"

OpenStudy (phi):

if you don't use the dance funds, you bring in 2490 and you spend 2460, which leaves a delta of 30 (sorry, not 10)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

are the costs predetermined an immutable?

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

will 30 be the closest to 0?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

for example, rent and electricity are bills that i HAVE to pay, and therefore they cant just be swept under the rug in the monthly budget; whereas internet and dining out are not 'necessary'

OpenStudy (amistre64):

otherwise, 0 fundraising can be applied to 0 costs lol

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

well some you can throw away because you are given the combination of the fundraisers. i need it to be as much close to 0 as possible.

OpenStudy (phi):

To be honest, I don't know exactly what they are looking for. The "most money" but with the closest to zero? I would just go with what you found so far: leave out the dance funds, leave out the book project, and hope that's a reasonable answer

OpenStudy (amistre64):

total your costs, assuming they are fixed then you need to determine a lattice for the fundrasing to cover the costs to as close to a zero balance as possible. is the way im reading/misinterpreting it

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

^^

OpenStudy (phi):

the costs total more than the available funds, so you have to cut some of the costs.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

can negative be closest to zero?

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

no you can't over spend it.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

it says negative balance is not allowed

OpenStudy (amistre64):

then my assumptions are just wrong lol

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

okay so this is my final answer: i will leave out the dance to get $2490 -- since $2570 - $80. i will also take out books because it will make the cost less than the money raised by taking out the books ($2660 - $200 = $2460). then i will get a combination of each (yearbook, food bank, grift, hat, lollipop)

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

@phi

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

will this be correct?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

mathematically, 0 fundraisers and 0 projects is "a" answer but practically if you're a representatice of student body, you would cut books and dances and let other stuff happen. cutting dances is necessary as it brings your balance close to 0 making you appear as a wise spender

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

@ganeshie8

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

and i forgot to add: "that will get the difference of $30" the least as i can get

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

@ganeshie8 am i correct?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

so you are raising a total of $2490 and spending a total of $2460 leaving out dances and books looks good to me !

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

thank you!!! :)
