Check my answer: What is the value of the expression |x| + |y + z| when x = –7, y = 8, and z = –11? my answer is -10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

uh the brackets idk

OpenStudy (phi):

the | | means absolute value. if you do | 3 | you get 3 if you do |-3| you get 3 it makes whatever is "inside" positive.

kk thx

OpenStudy (phi):

so you should be able to figure out |x| when x is -7 | -7 | = ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

7

OpenStudy (phi):

and | y + z| when y is 8 and z is -11 | 8 - 11 | first simplify to get -3, the simplify |-3|

OpenStudy (phi):

*first simplify 8-11 to get -3, then simplify |-3| to get 3 finally, add 7+3 (we are doing |x| + |y+z| )

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got 10

OpenStudy (phi):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

kk thx
