Does anyone know how to add and subtract negative integers using a "chip board"?

I really need help regarding my homework. I just need someone to check my answers.

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Can you help me?

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

I have no clue what it means to use a chip board.

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

So it's basically a board with two kinds of chips (black and red). The black chip represents the positives (1) and the red chip represents the negatives (-1).

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

If you do know about zero pairs, it's when you add a number along with the opposites, you always get zero, e.g. 1+(-1)=0 .

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

So you cancel those out.

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

I mean if you do want to learn, you can go to http://www.basic-mathematics.com/modeling-integers.html

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Well, then it should be pretty easy to get things correct. It is just seeing what cancels and what is left.

I seem to remember learning that in gradeschool.|dw:1410472178470:dw|
