3 waiters at a local restaurant earned different amounts of money the past week. Jennifer earned $40 less than twice the amount tony earned. Chris earned $60 more than Tony. How much did each waiter earn if they earned a total of $900?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(2x - 40) + x + (x + 60) = 900 I'm going on a whim here, but (2x - 40) represents Jennifer. x+60 represents Chris and x represents Tonys earnings. So just solve for x.

Hey reba :) These can be kinda tricky, we'll have to set up a system of equations. Let's try to do it piece by piece.

zepdrix (zepdrix):

`Jennifer earned 40 less than twice the amount tony earned`. Let's use letters to shorten this down. I'm going to rewrite the sentence as, `Jennifer's amount` `is` `twice tony's amount` `minus` `40` that's what 40 less than means ^ Using math symbols we can write this as:\[\Large\rm J=2T-40\]Where J is Jennifer's amount, and T is Tony's amount.

Closed? Oh you figure it out already? :o my bad.
