The Celts of Ireland believed they were descended from Partholan, the god of the underworld (also known as the god of the dead). Partholan, it is said, came to Ireland from the West, where beyond the vast, unsailed Atlantic Ocean lay the land of the Happy Dead. His father’s name was Sera. He arrived in Ireland with his queen Dalny and a number of companions. Ireland looked like a different place at that time. There were then but three lakes, nine rivers, and one plain in all of Ireland. More land features gradually appeared during the reign of the Partholanians. One, Lake Rury, is said to have burst forth as a grave was being dug for Partholan's son, Rury.
