"First they came for..." Martin Niemöller First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out-— Because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me. Use the excerpts above to write an essay, at least two paragraphs, supporting the question below. Remember to clearly state your main point and use quotes from the text to support your response, using the proper MLA format. How do Niemöller's words in "First they came for..." repeat the theme developed in "I Sit and Look Out" by Walt Whitman?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is what I got so far, Niemöller's words in "First they came for..." repeat the theme developed in "I Sit and Look Out" by Walt Whitman because both themes are a person wanting to change the past weather being from what they did or see. The words repeat the theme developed in "I Sit and Look Out" by Walt Whitman because in the first line of first the came for me..." says, "First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out-— Because I was not a Socialist." this means that he kept his mouth shut in the beginning because he was a quiet person. In the last line of the poem he regrets keeping his mouth shut because now he is helpless, indicated by the last sentence in the poem, "Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me." The theme in this poem is telling you what will happen if you keep letting others speak for you. The theme in the poem "I Sit and Look Out" by Walt Whitman is that there is so much meanness in the world and that doesn't do any god for anyone. He indicates the theme in the sentence in his poem by saying,"All these—All the meanness and agony without end, I sitting, look out upon, See, hear, and am silent." He sees horrible things going on in the world and he cant stop to see the good things going on because the bad is covering up the good.

@Artsy_Brian said this, DO NOT PLAGIARIZE!!! Personally, I give this full right of this information. "I think would help if you could add " " because it's get little confusing to if it's an literary piece tittle or part of the question :) how do niemoller's words in "First they came for..." repeat the theme developed in 'i sit and look out" by walt whitman I havent read niemolle's piece but i did read Whitman's piece, it's actually interesting since he was a Romantic writter so you might look for romantic qualities (individualism i believe was the main quality of Whitman's poem) and the way it's being written by the use of literary devices (imagery, simile, etc..) After you are done with that, the question is actually asking you how each literary work from these two different people have a common theme? Any theme you can come up with, support it Ex. Individuals tend to ostracize themselves from the society... Now explain why that theme is the same for both poems by using quotes."
