In medieval European society, was the king or the pope the most powerful figure?

OpenStudy (kohai):

The King, definitely

OpenStudy (praetorian.10):

lol not at all

OpenStudy (praetorian.10):

Pope's had the ability to declare holy war

OpenStudy (praetorian.10):

ever heard of the crusades?

OpenStudy (praetorian.10):

no single king could demand that so many soldiers from so many countries march thousands of miles to the holy land to declare war

OpenStudy (praetorian.10):

a king was in command of his estate and his serfs thats it a Pope had the respect and unending loyalty of every person who called themselves Catholic

OpenStudy (praetorian.10):

to be promised redemption for your sins if you go fight in the holy land was far more appeasing than being a knight back home killing lowly theifs

OpenStudy (praetorian.10):

the church was the most powerful entity in the known world

OpenStudy (praetorian.10):

to go against the will of the church was to go against God

OpenStudy (praetorian.10):

how many times have churches disposed of kings? heaps of times! how many times have kings destroyed the church? NEVER.

OpenStudy (praetorian.10):

i've been a student of ancient, classical and medieval history, i know what i am talking about

OpenStudy (praetorian.10):

@kohai @grray7

OpenStudy (praetorian.10):

what did THE POPE say right before the first crusade? "Deus vult!" (God wills it) note how it doesnt say: the king of france wills it (and by the way 30,000-35,000 crusaders, and 5,000 cavalry took part in the 1st crusade which means they were all convinced to do it by the promise of redemption not by order of the king - to say the king was more important is to say God is 2nd best to a sinful human being)

I thought it was the pope but it said wrong, then I said King and it still said incorrect, said the correct answer was the power dynamic shifted back and forth between pope and king. But yeah everything in the lesson kept saying pope. - _- stupid test

OpenStudy (kohai):

I completely thought that said "people" and not "pope" LOL!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wasn't there that one time, or rather, many times that the kings tried to like switch the religion? I don't really know what I'm talking about but I vaguely remember something about the Catholics and the protestants so maybe it was talking about how when the king declared being Catholic illegal the king had more power. That could be what the question was referring to, right prae? @PREATORIAN.10

OpenStudy (praetorian.10):

yeah i know what you mean, that one guy in england with 999 wives got told off by the church and then he started a rebellion because he thought he should be able to sleep with 999 girls and get away with it, the sicko. anyway his rebellion was crushed

OpenStudy (kingofhou):

The correct answer is 'neither, because the power dynamic shifted between the Church and the kings.'
