The little girl and her name in this story symbolize the realization of coping with one’s inner self at a time where it is least expected. The name Azucena is a girl’s name that is usually used in the Spanish language. The meaning of the name is Lily, such as the flower. The unique situation about this little girl is that she is not the one coping with her inner self. The other main character, whose name is Rolf Carle, is the other piece to the puzzle. The feeling that the two main characters were meant to meet each other lingers throughout the entire story. The fact that Rolf Carle was the only reporter to be able to reach this little girl at first, due to the advantage of having a television helicopter, is an omen in itself. The two characters begin to form a bond as Rolf Carle starts to try to get the little girl out of the mud. There are many other victims that need saving but for him this girl is all that matters. This is proven when he stays up the entire night and talks to the girl as she sleeps so she knows he has not left. “From time to time she dozed, but he kept talking in the darkness, to assure her that he was still there and to overcome the menace of uncertainty.” The moment when Rolf Carle is at the point of coping with his inner self is when he cannot bear to hold anything else in nor continue to be as strong as he has been for so many years. It is stated “the unyielding floodgates that had contained Rolf Carle’s past for so many years began to open.” The situation that Azucena is in, reminds himself of his childhood “found himself trapped in a pit without escape.” He then realizes that he is so successful at his job because of the fact that he is hiding his past deeper and deeper inside of him. This story of Azucena was the one to make him realize that to carry on with his life he must cope with his inner self. It is stated that “But he had come face to face with the moment of truth; he could not continue to escape his past. He was Azucena.” It took a disaster this big to make Rolf Carle realize who he was and what he needed to do to be able to carry on. “The girl had touched a part of him that he himself had no access to” by Rolf Carle being the first on the scene and doing everything possible to get the girl out of the mud and comfort her, in the end it was Azucena who was comforting him. “Don’t cry. I don’t hurt anymore. Im fine,” was said by Azucena. It was followed by Rolf Carle stating “Im not crying for you” “Im crying for myself” while smiling. The smile symbolizes the relief that is felt and can finally let go of the past. Overall that is all it took “a flower in the mud.” But for Rolf Carle it was much more than that. It was the day he could finally face himself and release all his pain.
